General information

The ICARE Master or master CARE (Clean And Renewable Energy) is a two- to three-year post-graduate programme, dedicated to students who have already obtained a degree in engineering (mechanical, electrical, process engineering) or another relevant scientific discipline (e.g. physics, mathematics, etc.).

All courses are taught mainly in English in ICARE Institute at Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) in Wuhan (China) by 8 Chinese professors from HUST and 50 European professors coming from partner universities* for 2-week teaching missions on average, all renowned experts in their fields.

Structure of the master

The configuration of the curriculum gathers theoretical courses in the first year (Semester 1 & Semester2), dedicating the second year to research activities split into a period called “first path to research” (Semester 3) and the internship (Semester 4).

  • Sem. 1: Mandatory courses (HUST professors) and fundamentals of renewable  energy (European professors)
  • Sem. 2:  Specialization and selection of one core course among solar, wind or biomass plus 2 out of the other courses.
  • Sem. 3:  Introduction to research – scientific weeks – Project management
  • Sem. 4:  Internship + report – in Europe for ~30% of students

The validation of Semester 1 to Semester 4 is needed to obtain the MINES ParisTech Master degree. One year of research in a Chinese laboratory is needed to get the HUST Master of Science.

Master's outcomes

Postgraduates of ICARE are expected to:

  • Have a good knowledge of basic theories in clean and renewable energy and relevant systematic knowledge.
  • Have more thorough research in one of the following disciplines: solar, wind energy, biomass, geothermal, hydrogen and energy storage and energy efficiency.
  • Understand the current global development and trend of renewable energy technology. Understand China’s energy policy and be familiar with China’s regulations on clean and renewable energy and energy efficiency, understand development of clean and renewable energy in Europe and related regulations.
  • Possess the ability of analyzing and solving technical problems within his/her field and the ability of managing relevant projects.
  • Have a scientific approach, be pragmatic, innovative and have a strong sense of dedication and cooperation.
  • Raise a good ability of communication and coordination, have good knowledge of spoken and written technical English.
  • Gain top interdisciplinary talents with competitive capabilities in research, decision-making, planning and execution in engineering and management for enterprises, research institutions, governments and other social organizations.
